Farewell to a Friend
2006 Christmas Choose Each Day to Receive this Word, and live by it
As we ponder the mystery of Christmas, we should ask ourselves if we are truly listening to the Word of God. Are we, in fact, people of the Word? Do we consciously and deliberately make time to receive God’s life-giving message by pondering the person of Christ and meditating upon His teachings? Even though the lives of contemporary men and women are hectic and full of distractions, it remains possible to find time for God. Indeed, we regularly set aside time to listen to the news, watch a favorite television program, read the newspaper, or enjoy a novel. What are these in comparison to the Word of God?
Who else but the Word made flesh can speak to us words of everlasting life? (cf. John 6:68.)

2006 Easter What good would life have been for us...?
“What good would life have been for us, had Christ not come as our Redeemer?” We would do dwell to ponder this question seriously, because it rivets our attention on the deepest reason for the joy that is ours at Easter...Easter joy is both gift and task. The joy that the Holy Spirit pours into our hearts is that of Christ himself, who rejoices in the love and mercy of God his Father. It is a joy he wills to be experienced by all people; a joy that the world in separation from Christ simply cannot give. This is why the Lord commissions the Church to go into the world to share the good news of the salvation that he has won for us, and to invite those who hear the message to respond by faith and baptism.

2005 Lent Jesus Christ, the Divine Physician
Turn to Jesus Christ, the divine physician, and ask Him to look within us, to examine not our physical structures, but the state of our relationship with God. The instruments used by our Lord are His own Word and the grace of the Holy Spirit poured into our hearts.
