Emmanuel: God is With Us!

The headlines are shouting doom and despair at me,

but today I am not listening.

The headlines are shouting doom and despair at me, but today I am not listening. Our culture is yelling obscenities at me, but today I am not listening. Problems and annoyances are mocking and taunting me, but today I am not giving in.

Not today. Not now. Maybe not tomorrow or the next day either. For now I am enthralled by one simple, beautiful word, and you should be, too. We should all be absorbed in awe over one amazing, mind-blowing word - Emmanuel, God is with us

Only Jesus is Emmanuel, God with us. Nothing in this world is more deserving of our attention, especially this season. Whatever else may be going on, our gaze should be fixed on Emmanuel. We should be looking expectantly at that manger with grateful hearts. We not only can rejoice, we must rejoice.

Only Jesus is Emmanuel,

God with us.

Nothing in this world

is more deserving of our attention,

especially this season.

Whatever else may be going on,

our gaze should be fixed on Emmanuel.              We should be looking expectantly

at that manger with grateful hearts.

We not only can rejoice,

we must rejoice!

A Year for Priests

19 June 2009 – 11 June 2010

On June 19, 2009, at the Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, Pope Benedict XVI inaugurated a "Year for Priests"... to deepen the commitment of all priests to interior renewal for the sake of a more forceful and incisive witness to the Gospel in today’s world.”  Using the words and witness of the saintly Curé of Ars, St. John Marie Vianney, he has broken open for all the depth and beauty of the priestly vocation. He has also invited all of the faithful to fully participate.

TEN POINTS FOR FRUITFUL SCRIPTURE READING

Reading the Bible should begin with a prayer to open our hearts and minds to the Word of God and end with “a prayer that this Word will bear fruit in our lives, helping us to become holier and more faithful people,” says Mary Elizabeth Sperry, Associate Director for Utilization of the New American Bible at the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB). Synod on the Word of God

October 05-26, 2008

Over 300 Bishops from around the world will gather in Rome for the XIIth Ordinary GeneralAssembly of the Synod of Bishops, to reflect on the theme of "The Word of God in the life and mission of the Church". Recently published is the Lineamenta (from the Latin, meaning an "outline"), a document which will provide the common basis on which to begin reflections.  Following suggestions and recommendations from the delegate Bishops, an Instrumentum laboris (working document) will then be produced and given to all the participants for discussion at the Synod.   Read the Lineamenta...

I AM THE BIBLE

I am God's wonderful library.

I am always and above all, the truth.

To the weary pilgrim,

     I am a strong staff.

To the one who sits in black gloom,

     I am glorious light.

To those who stoop beneath heavy burdens,

     I am sweet rest.

To those who have lost their weary,

     I am a safe guide.

To those who have been hurt by sin,

     I am healing balm.

To the discouraged,

I whisper a glad message of hope.

To those who are distressed by the storms

of life, I am an anchor, safe and sure.

To those who suffer in lonely solitude,

I am a cool, soft hand resting on a

     fevered brow.

Oh child, to best defend me,

     just use me!                (Author unknown)
